The Punta Cana “suite” traps
In Punta Cana, “suite” usually means a junior suite: one room with a sofa. Booking.com even labels some of them “1 living room, 1 separate bedroom”. These are the labels that mislead most often.
“King with sofa bed”
One room. The sofa bed is a few feet from your bed.
“Family suite”
Often two hotel rooms joined by an inside door.
“Junior suite”
One room with a seating area. No bedroom door.
What we found at specific resorts
- Booking.com describes many Punta Cana junior suites as '1 living room, 1 separate bedroom' (Bahia Principe 398 to 463 sq ft, Dreams Onyx 603 sq ft); they are one room
- Grand Palladium 'Loft Suites': the upstairs bed couch looks down on the king bed, with no door
- Barceló and Iberostar 'Family' rooms are two bedrooms, and Impressive's Family Room is two connecting rooms
- Dreams 'Master Suites' look like one-bedroom suites but most allow only 2 guests
- Paradisus Palma Real junior suites are open-plan: the 'living area' with the sofa bed is the same room
What to look for instead
- “Separate bedroom” or “one-bedroom suite” together with a living room.
- A sofa bed in the living room, not “king with sofa bed”.
- A maximum of 4 guests or more. Some real one-bedroom suites allow only 2 or 3.
